As the War progressed it became apparent that US walkers were rapidly falling behind in terms of firepower and were unable to challenge Axis tanks and walkers that seemed to get better with each passing day. US weapons designers at National Defense Research Committee sponsored research by the Springfield company, Worcester Polytechnic and the General Motors Company to develop anti-armor and anti-mech weapons that could be fitted to existing US Walkers, giving them the ability to "punch above their weight" and continue to serve as light AFVs and scouts on the battlefield.
